Grinning back over one shoulder, Aki watched her for a moment. The girl's new long coat billowed every time she hopped...the rich olive green fabric draping in panels in the back on either side of her tail.

Glancing up and catching Aki's gaze, Saara grinned. Her earrings were bright, as were her teeth...tiny and fine. Lowering her arm, Aki braced as her daughter crouched and jumped.

The view from Aki's shoulder was better, anyway! Curling around her guardian's neck like a generous stole, Saara watched the frozen pond approach with wide dark eyes.

"Excited, honey? Remember who were going to meet?"

Nodding, Saara tightened her grip...tail waving to the side as she balanced. "Tayyyylor!"

For a moment, Aki nodded...until she realized that sounded more like a greeting than an answer! Glancing up, ears dipping at the thought of being late, Aki peered around for any sign of the other pair. "Did you see her?"

Exhilaration! Elation! A little two-legged medicine hat would have almost been camoulflaged against the very dark contrast of the aspens and the snow. Her silky tobiano coat would have made her virtually invisible were Taylor not wearing a soft micro-fleece sweater, scarf, and mismatched mittens.

Syrcaid had no time to find a pair that matched, two pairs had been kicked about in Taylor's nursery and so she grabbed one that matched only the little pair of hands they'd fit on and ran with them. Taylor was far too excited to care about matching gloves and she wasn't one to let fashion get in her way of a good time.

Taylor ran with legs that were growing ever longer and ever stronger. Syrcaid envisioned an Olympic champion in the make, perhaps a sprinter or a marathon runner as Taylor would take off like an arrow stopping right at the distance where Syrcaid would be too far out of her reach, then waited impatiently as Syrcaid caught up. They ran and walked like this the moment Taylor'd been let out of her carseat.

Taylor's ears perked up as she stopped to wait for Syrcaid, steam pouring from her little nostrils.

"Tayyyylor!...." she heard in the distance.

With a high pitched squeal, she took off again towards the voice.
Hearing the squeal, Saara perked...both ears turning to face the sound. Coiling down around Aki's body, heading for the cold ground, she scampered off into the snowbanks before Aki could blink.

"H-hey! Wait! Saara, that's not safe, you know you're supposed to be within sight! I-OMPH!!!"

"SHH!"

Staggering a bit as a little snowball caught her in the back of the head, Aki turned just in time to see her daughter duck down once more. She rubbed the snow from her hair and smiled ruefully...turning as the sound of someone approaching became clearer.

Who was this leggy lass, then, all abuzz and galloping along?! "Taylor, hello! Ooh, you look lovely! You'll have to find Saara though, I fear we've misplaced her!"

Offering the girl a wink, Aki stepped aside...honoring the time held tradition of 'waiting for the other parent.' When she finally spotted Syrcaid, she raised a hand in gloved greeting. "You found us!!"

"Taylor found you, actually!" Syrcaid called back, steam puffing from her lips as she jogged to keep up with Taylor. "How have you both been? Was your Christmas a good one?"

Taylor ran squealing in circles around Aki for a moment in greeting before scampering off to look for Saara. Loose hair falling over her eyes as she scampered zig-zagging through the trees in search of her little friend.

Syrcaid took this moment to catch her breath, watching Taylor run with youthful, unstoppable energy. Taylor loved open spaces where she could run long distances, without any need for shoes that those with tender feet wore she feared no surface. Syrcaid had wondered if when she was older if she'd protest to metal horeshoes, so far she hadn't a real need for them.
Crouching as Taylor passed, Saara sprinted for a tree...launching from the snow pile to the trunk. The loosely crossed sashes of her overcoat pulled apart as she spread her arms, the garment spreading to the same dimensions as her extended limbs. Jarring the tree a bit as she connected, the girl hurried upwards like a squirrel...perching carefully on a thick lower limb. Her ears twitched with anticipation as Taylor galloped closer...

"Our Christmas was lovely! Saara's wearing her new jacket, and has a new bed! Well, more of a pouch, but it's what she prefers. She decorated cookies for me in return...you should have seen them!" Grinning with a parents fondness, Aki shook her head...still remembering the mess. "All sorts of spices and objects...not normal cookie toppings, oh no! How about you and Taylor? Did she enjoy herself?"

Saara was oblivious to their conversation, crouching as her friend neared. With a fierce sweep of her tail, she finally made her move...brushing a powder of snow from the branch top gently down to her friends nose. Even as she laughed, her motion tugged her off balance...and with a squeak, Saara fell into the drift beside Taylor.

"Hiii! Eeeeee!" Svelte fur frosted with snow, Saara struggled to free herself for a hug. "Hi Taylor!"

Taylor squealed and giggled into her hands as Saara fell beside her, then pulled her for a hug. She hadn't seen her friend in a while, but she remembered.

"She enjoyed herself immensely," Syrcaid nodded, watching the two children meet once more. "Taylor doesn't have the patience to sit and make cookies yet, but she enjoys helping me paint the warehouse of our shop. We spent only about an hour at home then ran over to get presents sent out. It's kind of hard being a shopowner on the holidays, all those live animals and things need tending to no matter -what- day it is."

"Saara!" Taylor was still hugging her friend, before letting her go to fish in her pockets.

"Uh oh, it's apple time," Syrcaid said softly to Aki.

Without fail, Taylor pulled out an enormous red apple from inside her pocket.
Aki took a few steps back, still watching the children, and smiling at Syrcaid's story. Finding the bench blindly behind her with one hand, she brushed off the show and took a seat. There was plenty of room for someone beside her!

"Ooh, so cute! Saara has something she's been saving for Taylor as well, but I couldn't convince her to wrap it." Aki's voice was soft as well, meant only for her companion.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Saara wasn't listening anyway. Eyes going wide at the sight of the apple, she made a high pitched happy little noise...batting at the smooth skin with the soft pads of her palm. Apple! She remembered now!!

Wiggling free from the snow for a moment, she bounded over to Aki....holding both hands in the air. Humoring her, Aki plucked the gift from her pocket and settled it into Saara's arms...laughing as she bounded away with a jingle. "She tied the bow herself!"

Waddling over the drift, Saara presented the gift with both hands...the object far larger for her than Taylor, who was still bigger than she. It was a shiny metal apple jingle bell, with a gauzy green ribbon!

"Dun eetit! Ow! Here!" A helpful warning! It would make a lovely necklace though. Waiting for Taylor to take her new gift, Saara shifted her short attention span back to the real apple and giggled. They both brought apples!

Syrcaid sat down, too, thankful for a place to sit.

"Oh, that's absolutely precious!" Syrcaid said. "You guys didn't have to do that, it's beautiful!"

"Apple!" Taylor squealed and traded the bell for the apple. "Apple!" she laughed as she took the bell. "It ring?"

Taylor have it a test jingle and it gave a satisfying chime, in an instant she was whinnying laughter again and running in large circles around Saara, jingling her little bell and doing her best redintion of "Jingle Bells".

"Dingle bell, dingle bells, jingo all da waaaaaay....! O what fun ittis ta ride... one horse opah slay...!"

"Erm, she doesn't quite know what a one horse open sleigh is yet," Syrcaid mentioned on the side to Aki and stuffed a laugh into her hand. "I think it's just as well or she'd offer to pull one."
Leaning to the side, Aki confided while the girls played. "It's from a set of ornaments we bought this year...there was a peach, a cherry, and a pear as well! When Saara saw the apple one, though..."

Trailing off with a smile, Aki nestled down into her scarf a bit and chuckled. "Well. I'm glad you guys could make it, she's been so eager to see Taylor! Who, by the way, is growing up to be quite a lovely lass!"

There was something so vivacious and free about the young filly...perhaps it was in part that same quality that Saara so admired!

At the moment, Saara was too busy admiring the shiny real apple. Rolling it this way and that way in the snow, she finally found a resting place for it and CHOMP! Suddenly it was missing a bite!

Hauling it up once more, the skin broken by a tiny nibble, Saara offered it to Taylor as well. "Weekin share!" An apple was twice as yummy when two people were enjoying it!

"It was still very sweet of her to think of us," Syrcaid nodded. "Taylor doesn't have anyone at home her age and so she's always delighted to see other people from the Fourth Wall headquarters with their kids."

Syrcaid watched as Taylor sat down finally, huffing steam out her nostrils as she plopped next to Saara. What was not to like about a little friend that shared a love of apples? Taylor took a bite, too, then passed it back.

"I think I should've brought another apple," Syrcaid laughed. "Taylor isn't very chatty, though, not as much as Saara is anyway. She's sometimes so anxious to get around and do something that she doesn't speak and just heads for the hills."
Watching with interest, Aki glanced to Syrcaid with a smile. "Well, some peace and quiet would be a new experience! Saara's new thing is writing...she's coming right along, and practices all the time! On the walls, on my papers, on the table..."

Laughing without a hint of resentment, Aki tucked her hands under her arms to warm them. "It would be great if they could spend more time together! Perhaps Taylor would chat a bit more, and Saara would get out some! She's usually cooped up in the house or the garden...she's never really gone exploring!"

Letting the idea brew, Aki settled back and watched the children play...happy they found so much joy in simple things. Saara was finding more than joy...she had a friend, a snack, and lots and lots of snow! Taking another big bite (for her, anyway) she chewed happily as she rolled to the side.

"Mmph! Mm rachnmmph?" She flopped over onto her back to demonstrate...waving her arms and legs to make a rather indistinct snow angel. Would Taylor want to make one too?

"I don't mind if you don't mind," Syrcaid mused, putting her elbows on her knees and propping her chin on her hands as she watched them play. "They're certainly like peas and carrots right now. I hope that lasts and lasts and lasts..." she said dreamily, watching them play as though she were watching a childhood favorite movie.

Taylor stared, mouth open and full of apple with interest at what Saara was doing. Cocking her head to one side she saw her moving in the snow. Taylor set the apple down and plopped back in the snow, a little too hard as snow flew up and hit her on the nose as it fell down. She laughed and squealed as cold snow dribbled down her lip.

"All Taylor wants to do is explore the world around her, it wouldn't be so bad to have a friend along the way," Syrcaid agreed. "Especially one with a shared fondness for apples."

Taylor spread out her arms experimentally at first and then waved them up and down as Saara did. It was hard to do it with the legs on account of her tail getting in the way.
Bounding up out of the snow, Saara peered at her own angel...one ear laying back as she sighed. Not too clear. Taylor's was going much better, though!

Offering out both of her little hands, obviously waiting to give Taylor a hand back up to her feet, Saara grinned and flicked her tail in excitement. "Up?"

Aki sighed in the same fashion, also enamored of the sweet children at play. It was as though they carried no weight...the world of troubles around them unknown and unmissed.

Leaning a bit closer to Syrcaid, she kept her voice private...still watching the girls out of one eye. "Do you...know anything? About where they came from?"

Aki knew the basics...whatever Karma had mentioned when Saara came into her care. A troubled world, a rift between them...amazing, but she believed it. Looking at Saara, she had to believe it! But the question still lingered.

What if she ever wanted to go back?

"From what I know about temporal rifts and tears in reality..." Syrcaid heaved a sigh as she mustered up the brains and worked out the inner cobwebs to form an answer. "... it was explained to me that their world is falling apart. Literally."

Syrcaid leaned forward picked up a ball of snow in her warm bare hands.

"Their world is slowly melting, oozing into who knows what but there was one tiny gap where stuff could spill out, but only small enough to fit little things," she said as water droplets began to form in the gap of two fingers and gravity pulled it downwards. "So from what I can figure, the only thing that fit through was children of many dying races. They're just fortunate that what was on the other side was -us-! I don't know how Karma found it or managed to build a shop around it, but that was double good fortune, if you ask me!"

Taylor parroted,"Up!" and promptly lept up and turned around to see the hole she'd made in the snow. To her surpise it didn't look like her own shape much at all, she puzzled at it. She knew nothing of angels, but it kinda looked like...

"Valentine!" she pointed, mistaking an angel for Cupid.
Aki listened quietly....watching the water drops fall. She didn't wish to be sad, so instead she found the positive side...as her companion seemed so adept at doing. "Good fortune indeed. I can't imagine a place where they'd be more wanted. I just wonder, though...if we can help the rest of them? If they can help their true kin!"

It was a lofty thing to contemplate. As much as she wished happiness for Saara, she wanted the girl here, with her. Was that selfish, or was that the mark of a true mother? Perhaps both.

Glancing up as Syrcaid bent down, Saara smiled...ears perking as she watched the adults for a moment. As Taylor bounded up, however, she was instantly distracted again...staring down at the image left in the snow. She didn't know what valentines was, but....

"Aki! Aki Aki! Horse 'n wingses! Whaaaaasit?" Chattering across the snow to her guardian, Saara made a flapping motion. It had been in a book once...

Aki considered for a moment, trying to figure out what her girl was asking. "Ah, um....pegasus?" The young sugar glider squealed in appreciation. "Piggysis!"
