THERE IS NO TSUBASA SEASON THREE. THERE WILL BE A SERIES OF OVAS THAT WILL BE RELEASED SOON. WAIT FOR THOSE.
Yes, you heard me correctly. No season three. However, that's not to say that there won't be more anime. The purpose of this thread is to act as an information source concerning any and all animated continuations of the Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE anime, Tsubasa Chronicle. This is not a place to discuss the differences between the anime and manga overall, unless it pertains to certain details that you may need to know in order to understand the OVAs. This will be dealt with as it is brought up, but for now, focus solely on the anime.
To start us off, let's do a Q&A.
Why is there no season three?
There are a number of reasons why the television anime was discontinued, so we'll focus on the main reasons. For one thing, CLAMP admitted to not being pleased with the anime adaption of their series and broke their contract with Bee Train, the company that animated it. The series could have been liscensed by another company, and ultimately it was, however, it was not allowed to be shown on television. The main reason behind the discontinuation of the anime was actually not Bee Train, it was the NHK. The NHK is the television station that Tsubasa airs on in Japan. The NHK has had the rights to Syaoran and Sakura since the days when Cardcaptor Sakura aired on the same station. The NHK is more or less Japan's version of PBS. It's a family station, aimed at very young children. The anime of Tsubasa is aimed at 3 to 4 year olds. The manga is aimed at young adults/adults. The later half of the manga becomes incredibly violent, to the point where the NHK would not allow the arcs in question to be aired on tv without being censored, and CLAMP didn't want it to be censored. On the flip side, the NHK would not give up the rights to the show. So it was a lose-lose situation, and the series was cancelled.
So if there's no season three, what comes next?
Production I.G, the company that made xxxHOLiC tv and the Tsubasa and HOLiC movies, liscensed the series and set to make a new series of OVAs entitled Tsubasa Tokyo REVELATIONS. Currently, three OVAs have been confirmed to be released in late 2007 and early 2008.
Why OVAs?
OVAs are a straight to DVD release, meaning they get to bypass any and all censorship rules involved when making the tv anime. Basically Production I.G did a major, '******** you' to the NHK seeing as the NHK can't say crap about what content is put into the OVAs. The OVAs could be more violent or even sexual than the original manga was and the NHK can't say crap about it.
When are the OVAs going to be released in Japan?
Here is the release schedule:
When will the OVAs be released in America/Europe/etc.?
FUNimation has the tv series, the movie, the HOLiC tv series, and the HOLiC movie liscensed for distribution. However, no word yet on them liscensing the OVAs, or even being aware of their existance. Last I heard, they still were under the impression a third season was under production, despite it having been confirmed for some time that no third season was coming. However, once they are liscensed, I wouldn't expect to see them released until after season two is finished being released. However, I highly encourage anyone who knows how to contact FUNimation to encourage them to release a limited edition DVD containing the three OVAs in Japanese audio only with subtitles ahead of time and then rerelease it with the dub track at a later date, so that fans don't have to wait until 2009 to get the DVDs and don't have to torrent, etc. to get them. We want to try and buy these DVDs and give money to the company so that they can be encouraged to continue making them, after all. We want to see Infinity and Ceres animated as well.
Who is making the OVAs?
The OVAs will be made by Production I.G. As it stands, the cast will be the same from the TV series. No word yet on who will be playing the new characters introduced in this story arc. The script was written by Ohkawa herself. Kajiura Yuki will still be producing the score. The opening theme will be preformed by Makino Yui (Sakura's seiyuu) and the ending theme will be preformed by Maaya Sakamoto.
What arcs do the OVAs cover?
As it stands, only Acid Tokyo will be covered, but there is a high possibility we may see a bit of Lecourt and Infinity.
Will there be more than the three OVAs?
Honestly we don't know. There's still more arcs to be covered, the series doesn't end in Tokyo, but as it stands there have been no official announcements. In my personal opinion, Production I.G will wait to see how the first three OVAs are recieved before signing on to do more. If they do well, I have no doubt we'll be seeing Infinity + animated. It just seems silly for them to sign on to do a shitload of OVAs that might not even be recieved well. They'd waste so much money.
How do I get the OVAs?
You order volumes 21 - 23 of the manga and have them shipped from Japan. That's the only way you can get them as of now.
Will there be a single DVD release with all three parts of the OVA on it?
I would suspect so, once all three are released. No official word on that yet, though.
How will Tokyo REVELATIONS fit in to the rest of the tv anime?
Sad to say, but from the looks of it the OVAs will have very little to do with the original anime, despite being a continuation of it. The latter half of the second season of the anime was all filler, everything after Lecourt/Rekord did not happen in the manga and directly contradicted things that happened later in the manga. Acid Tokyo takes place right after Lecourt and from the looks of it, the OVAs are going to replace the filler arcs. So basically, ignore everything after the Lecourt arc of the anime, as none of that really happened. Acid Tokyo came next.
Just how violent are these OVAs going to be?
Very violent. biggrin Eyes will be ripped out and eaten, arms will be ripped off, etc. It shall be lovely.
SUBARU?!
YES. < 3
What about HOLiC?
A second season for the television anime has been confirmed. All that we know as of now is that the cast will remain the same as the first season, and we can assume it will still be made by Production I.G. No word on when it is set to begin airing and no word on how the Tsubasa crossovers will be handled.
What is this CLAMP IN WONDERLAND I keep hearing about?
Completley different thing. CLAMP in Wonderland is a music video made in 1995 (or around that time) made by Madhouse that was more or less a showcase of every series CLAMP had made up until that point. Earlier this year (2007) another video was made by Madhouse called CLAMP IN WONDERLAND 2. This video documented every series made up until now, including series like Gouhou Drug, Clover, and Kobato. Naturally, the Tsubasa gang make a cameo appearance. CLAMP IN WONDERLAND and CLAMP IN WONDERLAND 2 will be released in a two disk(?) box set entitled CLAMP IN WONDERLAND 1&2 1989~2006<PRECIOUS BOX> on October 26th.
Where can I find more information?
If you can read Japanese, then there's the official OVA site, which can be found here. Other than that, all I can say is to check back here regularly.
