I was watching the Comedy Central show "Lil' Bush" for the first time earlier tonight, and it brought me upon a question. Have we as Americans began to abuse our freedom of speech? Have we begun to use it only to bash and hate the people that we have in any form of power? Making fun of our teachers to our principles to our president. Im not trying to make a political statement, I think both political parties need cleaning-up. I also deeply value our freedom of speech, I just want to hear other oppinions.

Discussion: Freedom of Speech and how it has affected our country over time.

I think we've started to abuse freedom of speech long ago. Probably since we gave Colbert a microphone. Maybe even earlier when Michael Moore was allowed to make Bowling for Columbine.

How does Colbert (Stephen, right?) abuse freedom of speech? He gives us news in a comedic fashion, much like Jay Leno or Conan (albeit Colbert does go a little too far sometimes).

I watched Lil' Bush once. And I was ashamed to be laughing. I was ashamed that our president was being mocked on TV like this (even though I don't support him that much). The only way I can see Lil' Bush being justified is if the president actually approves of it.

I dont care if he's trying to be funny. The thing is: He's as democrat as you can possibly get. He's not a Republican. His entire show is based on mocking conservatives and Republicans.

Colbert is amazing!

I'm sorry, unless we are broadcasting lies as truth or preaching hate, or something along those lines, we can say whatever we want. That's what's great about this country.

So? It's funny. It's not harming anyone. It's on comedy central. If you don't like it, don't watch it. It's not preaching hate or anything.

Yes, that is kind of the whole point of Colbert, genius. The whole show is one huge "mock".

There is nothing wrong with criticism of the government. If anything, it should help straighten it out. And why do you think that so much government criticizing things are popping up in the media lately? Maybe because the people aren't feeling to happy about it right now.

I have to admit, Lil' Bush is a bit of a stretch, not because he is the president, but a show obviously mocking any living person rather humiliating.

But none of that is abuse of freedom of speech in my opinion. People need to be allowed to criticize the government, and I think that the fact that that happens so much lately meant 2 things. 1: We aren't very happy with the government as a majority, or this wouldn't be occurring. 2: That luckily, our rights of freedom of speech are still alive, and hopefully will continue to be so. Let Colbert mock whatever comes into sight, and keep it up. And if you don't like it, turn off the tv.

What the...are you kidding? Wow. That's news to me. I thought he was a Bush supporter. xD Wow. That was pretty convincing.

That's the point. He said on a 20/20 interview that he's never himself on TV. He said that he imitates Bill O'Reilly on pretty much everything, whether it be the ability to make up words without a second thought, the uncanny ability to support Bush on every decision- He also said in that 20/20 interview that he knows he's done his job when can talk for half an hour and not believe a thing he just said.

I'm obviously paraphrasing, but that's essentially what I saw.

I dont watch it. I watched it like once or twice, thought it was pretty clever, then I saw the 20/20 interview and felt completely insulted.

I dont know what you'd classify as abusing freedom of speech. Well, if abusing freedom of speech as preaching hate and broadcasting lies as truth, then that'd have to be Fahrenheit 9/11.

What's wrong with Bowling for Columbine? Did he lie in it?

It's impossible to abuse a natural right. We can say whatever we want, and it's OK.
