Um, my logic teacher insisted that mathematical induction doesn't prove things, and wouldn't listen to my explanation. When I was trying, for the 4 time, to get through my short explanation uninterupted, she suddenly said, "I don't want to discuss this with you any further," as if I were being unreasonable!

Mathematical induction follows this form:

If A then B.
A.
-------------
B.

This form is actually discussed in one of the assigned sections of our logic book. We didn't talk about it in class today, but you'd think that she would be aware of something so basic which was in the 1st chapter of an "intro to logic" book.

Give me a real-life, non-math example because I am retarded and can't visualize what you mean. 3nodding

I can't give you a non-math example of mathematical induction, but I can give you a non-math example of that form of deductive argument.

If X is a dog, then X has 4 legs.
X is a dog.
------------------------------------
X has 4 legs.

In mathematical induction, you prove the premises with things you already know (so, they are conclusions at first, and then become premises) and, together, they imply the conclusion.

Argh, I hate it when people take logic, and have diarhea all over it. Take a logic course and save me the trouble of smashing your brain into a wall. I really wish people would do that.

I'm IN a logic class right now. But mathematical induction was covered in Discrete Math and Number Theory, which I had in the past two semesters. The main point is that Mathematical Induction proves something 100%, despite the fact that it's called "induction" and my logic book says that induction gives you probable conclusions.

Mathematical Inductions works basically like this: You prove that one thing implies another, and you prove that the antecedent is true. The end.

Now tell me what is mistaken about that.

That wouldn't help anyone.

I know! We can cure cancer by killing all the people who have it. Right?

Just in case you can't follow the analogy, I'll explain. The answer to ignorance is education, not death. New people will be born who will start out ignorant. Killing them solves nothing. In a similar way, killing people with cancer won't stop cancer altogether. New people will get cancer.

If you think about it though, that would work with AIDS...

Oops. That's called "evil", right?

We'll throw them all in camps and give them tattoos... wait... o.o

That would work until some other a*****e ******** another monkey in Africa...
