Salt dough is one of the easiest and raddest ways to make jewelry. It's like playing with Playdough, except it dries faster and is easier to paint. You can make your own designs. You can recreate things you've seen in stores. Either way, you and up with wearable art. ;D
Note: this recipe makes a manageable amount of dough. You might want to double it if you're intending to get all hard-core on us.
Start by mixing 1/2 cup salt, 1/4 cup water, and 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil in a bowl. Then add 1 cup all-purpose flour (white flour). Adding the flour will be kind of tricky. Mix it as well as you can with a spoon, but prepare to dump it out on the counter and get your hands dirty.
Once that's mixed, prepare for the fun part--shaping! Shape it into whatever you want. Make pendants or charms by forming a shape and sticking a looped wire into the top, make beads by poking a toothpick through and forming a hole, make a mini-bust of your teacher, whateva. Spread your creations out onto a lined baking sheet when you're done. If you're not afraid of ovens, bake them at 250 degrees for a few hours. If you are afraid of ovens, leave them out to dry overnight.
Once those babies are dry, you can get ready to decorate. I recommend giving them a good coat of acrylic craft paint because it adheres so easily, but you could also use spray paint. Then you can go insane and break out the glitter, rhinestones, stickers, Sharpies, whatever strikes your fancy.
When you're done decorating, string your creations on twine, hook them onto a chain, or make them into a charm. Some examples of what I've made are in my second post (bear with my blurry pics).
Have fun wearing your new jewelry. surprised
