Captain: Jushiro Ukitake
Details: Together with Kyouraku Shunsui, Captain Ukitake was the first Captain ever to emerge from the Shinigami Academy over 2000 years ago. Powerful, popular, and bound by his honor, his strength is only offset by a terminal illness which weakens his body, severely limiting his combat abilities and durability. Among the 13 Captains, he is likely the most beloved and one of the most respected, caring for his subordinates like his own family. He is haunted still by the memory of the loss of his former Vice-Captain Kaien Shiba, and continues to hesitate to fill his old position 50 years later.

Details: Once occupied by the late Kaien Shiba, the Vice-Captain's seat in the 13th Division has remained empty for over 50 years following his death. Whether this is out of respect from his Captain, or out of a feeling of hesitation to 'replace' Kaien is unknown. However, Captain Ukitake seems to be in no hurry to fill the position. Co-3rd Seat Officers Kiyone Kotetsu and Sentarou Kotsubaki currently take up the duties left unattended without a Vice-Captain.
