The day had dawned clear and bright, and after several similar days spent getting their new cave settled in, which pretty much equated to Demeter sending Saturn on endless trips to search for the softest leaves and pine boughs to create their nest..and then her endless nit picking at each and every placement until at long last she had declared it just right, Demeter had decided that it was time to see just who happened to live nearby.

And so on that note She and Saturn had set off from their cave early in the morning to take a tour of the area and hopefully..run across a few of the neighbors. At the moment they had stopped alongside the lake and Demeter was anxiously awaiting the appearance of another and hoping beyond hope that they would turn out to be decent.

"I really hope their not..you know...weird or anything.." She stated to Saturn as she glanced about the area, surely someone would come soon - this was the best source of water for miles and Demeter couldn't fathom anyone deciding to drink anywhere else. Why settle for anything less then the very best after all?

The days of setting up their new home had gone by quickly and for the most part Saturn thought they were adjusting nicely. Demeter was her usual picky self, and he showed the same patience he always had when out preforming tasks. Now that Demeter had deemed their house livable they could take the time to see who else lived in the valley.

When he arrived at the lake with Demeter it was quiet. It brought him an odd sense of peace to know that this place could be so quiet and serene. He took a sip of the cool mountain lake water and looked at Demeter as she fretted over meeting their new neighbors.

"Everything will be fine my dear. I am sure our new neighbors will be quite normal." It couldn't be any worst than some of their previous homes at least, it would take a lot to top that.

Garfield landed heavily at the edge of the lake. He would much rather have stayed in his cave eating his hoarded food, but he had been thirsy for a while, so he had resigned himself to coming to get a drink. He could have walked the distance probably, but flying was easier. The wind carried you.
After settling his wings he noticed the others.

Demeter had been about to respond to Saturn's remarks - something to the effect of 'thats what you said last time and see how that turned out?' when her attention was grabbed by the arrival of another male. well..he's not exactly the most graceful of creatures is he? was her first thought as she scrutinized his rather heavy footed landing.

Arching a brow at Saturn as though to say 'well...lets find out whose right' Demeter sauntered closer to the orange male, fixing him with a disarming look
"Well hello there..do you live around here?" Quite frankly if he said no she didn't see any point in continuing this conversation - Demeter wasn't instersted in meeting traveler's after all.

He watched the other male land at the lake and glanced at Demeter. "Be nice." He said quietly to her before she walked off to greet the newcomer. Not knowing exactly what would happen when the two of them got to talking Saturn followed her over to where the orange male stood.

"Greetings friend, I am Saturn. And this," he motioned towards his mate, "is Demeter." He could only hope that she wouldn't get mad at him for introducing her without knowing whether the male was from around here or not.

Were these the ones he had seen out and about moving in? They looked similar.
"I'm Garfield, I live over that way." He indicated a vaugue direction to lazy to clarify. Having never been that entheusiastic about meeting anyone, he wondered if they were going to draw out the conversation or let him go back to his cave and sleep.
He bent down and took a drink of water. It was the reason he had come here anyways.
He looked back to those adressing him. He really wasn't bieng inhospitable, just lazy.

Demeter cast Saturn an irritated gaze as he gave out their names so quickly - that was never a good thing, once you gave someone your name they liked to think you were friends or acquaintance or something along those lines. Demeter preferred to keep things a bit more distanced for a while. Ah - well to late now.

Turning her gaze back to this orange male - who introduced himself as Garfield she glanced in the direction he motioned and noted several caves that could be his dwelling, since he didn't elaborate Demeter tsked slightly, she wasn't fond of those who weren't precise in their words.

"We just moved in" She purred at him after a few moments silence. "we're still getting to know the area..perhaps you can give us some tips?" She asked - she doubted it, but she asked anyways. He didn't really seem like the type to know anything of importance, but then maybe she was selling him short.

Saturn shrugged slightly at Demeter's look. He knew she hated telling strangers their name, but Garfield seemed nice enough. He too glanced in the direct that he indicated was his home. It was a good distance away from the cave they called their home.

"Tell me Garfield. Are their many others that live in this valley?" He could tell that the orange male didn't really want to stay and have a conversation, but given that he was the first one they met since they moved in he at least wanted to know how many others lived here. After that the male could go as he pleased if he wished.

Garfield resigned himself to talking and settled down on his haunches. "Well, there are several others around, all pretty nice, I suppose. You should meet them if you stick around here long enough." He was not sure he felt like exerting the effort to resume flight just yet, so he may as well talk.
"Nothing much around here to harm, pretty peaceful, you can pretty much do as you please." He did pretty much as he pleased and no one or thing had ever bothered him in this particular area. He supposed some others would be interested in meeting these new neighbors.

The small skinny baby dragon moved through the brush in the mountain valley. He had made the forest his home. He lived alone, he was always alone, he had also hatched alone. He didn't know who his parents where or why they had abandoned him but what had been done was done. At the moment he was stalking a small lizard almost ready to pounce on it. Bugs, and lizards were his main diet (if he could catch them) being to small to hunt anything bigger and to slow to hunt rabbits.

Soon he pounced but his claws came up empty as the small lizard scurried away from him and into an hollow old tree to small for the baby dragon to fit in. A frown appeared on Zayford's face as yet another one of his 'hunts' had failed. His tail curled around him as he sat in the clearing for a few moments a small sigh escaping his lips, maybe his scales were too brightly colored to properly hunt. Lately more and more of his 'prey' had been getting away from him. And lately he had been resorting to eating the plain tasting disgusting grass under him. He reluctantly glanced down at the stuff yet another sigh escaping him, if his day continued like this it seemed his dinner would yet again be the grass.

Pushing himself back to his feet the small baby dragon moved on from the spot, for he knew staying in one spot for too long could cause trouble for him. In the past he had been attack by wolves, he didn't know if he had got too close to their den or if they were on the hunt and he was the only thing in sight to hunt. Even so he couldn't really defend himself against a pack of wolves so he ran for his dear little life and hid the best he could. A shiver ran down his spine as he remembered that memory. Even so the memory caused him to quicken his pace through the forest, heading quicker towards his destination..the Lake.

His stomach growled on his way as he let out a small hiss at it trying to make it be quiet. Yeah as like hissing at it would do anything for his deep hunger. It was a wonder on how long the baby dragon has lasted since he hatched from his egg. Finally he arrived at his destination, but seeing others at the lake he kept to the shadows. He didn't know if they were friend or foe, even so since the wolf's attack he had always been weary of meeting new creatures.

Stomach growling again he decided to take his chance, after all after failing in his hunt he needed something to satisfy the growling of his stomach, and he always fill that hole in his stomach with water. As he moved the sun bounced off of the colorful scales on his back. Once he reached the water's edge he quickly lapped up the water with his tongue, like a cat or a dog would. He'd probably been noticed but the water filling the hole in his empty stomach felt marvelous.

Well at least Saturn decided to ask about pertinent information now, Demeter thought to herself as he asked about the other denizen's of the valley. She turned her head to beam at him so he would know she was pleased before turning her attention back to the orange male - Garfield - she reminded herself.

"Oh yes...I'm sure they're all quite lovely" Demeter answer, and if one knew her very well at all one could probably pick up the hint of skepticism in her voice at that comment - she was fairly certain that very few of them would be lovely at all. They would be lucky she thought to herself if half of them turned out to be worth consorting with. Still it was nice to know the area was mostly peaceful, Saturn might find some peace here.

"I do think we plan on staying around, don't we Saturn?" She asked her companion turning to smile at him again before continuing "I do rather like it here.." She finalized, a comment which was more a firm statement of her intent then a suggestion. It was while she was in the process of turning her attention back to Garfield that she noticed movement out of the corner of her eye and whipping her head towards it blinked at sight before her.

It was..a baby! Demeter clicked her beak together and gushed with motherly joy before bounding over to the small creature and cooing back to Saturn
"Saturn! look its a small baby...dragon, it looks sick..we simply must care for it..we must!!" She insisted stamping one of her forelimbs on the ground to further impart her feelings before turning her attention back to the little dragon. Sure it wasn't a hippogriff child - which was a shame...but a sickly baby was a sickly baby - and while Demeter was hardly a pleasant sort she was prone to such whims of motherly affection once in a while.

"Do you think it can talk?" She asked Saturn and Garfield before leaning down to peer at the creature skeptically "Can you talk?"

Garfield's attention was diverted to the small dragon by Demeter's actions. Lazily he swished his tail and lifted himself from where he sat. Lazily he stepped over towards Demeter and the object of her outburst.
The baby looked hungry but he wasn't particularly fond of sharing his hoard of food. Oh well, even if starvelings weren't really his buisness he supposed he could give it some food at least. It was a baby after all.

"Yes the valley does seem to be quite peaceful. That is one of the reasons why we choose this place as our new home." He replied to Garfield. Though he did have to wonder if all their new neighbors would be like him or slightly more active. "We look forward to meeting them all."

His attention turned to Demeter. "Yes dear, we do plan to stay here." Before he could say any more he too spotted a small movement near the edge of the water. He turned his head to inspect it while Demeter immediately rushed over to where the baby dragon was. Saturn cringed slightly at how overly excited she suddenly got.

"We don't even know if it's parents are around." He replied to her overly mothering gesture towards the baby. He knew better than to say that, of course it's parents weren't around, by the looks of it the poor thing had been abandoned and would surely die without some help. He rolled his eyes knowing that there was no getting out of this. "Yes dear, of course we must take care of him."

He glanced back at the small dragon. He was far too skinny and clearly needed someone to provide things like food, water and protection to him.

((Poor Zayford...))

The loud Griffen had startled Zayford causing him to jump to his feet, his little wings flapping behind him a small squeak escaping him. He had yet learned to use his wings yet, he had been trying to self teach himself what they were used for, but he had always been too hungry to focus. When the female's hoof stamped on the ground before him a low growl escaped him, thinking he was being threatened.

He backed up a bit as the other two approached him. Still growling he slowly approached towards the forest's edge in which he had come. As small as he was though he wouldn't be able to take all three of them on. His tiny jaws snapped his warning before he turned and darted into the forest in which he came. He ran till he found a large enough bush which to hide in.

Tail curling around him the frightened little dragon shook under the bush. He was alone in the world wasn't he? Those creatures out there, they weren't like him, where were those like him? His parents? His family? Why did he never wonder about this before? Was it because he believe that how he ended up that was how things were suppose to be. Yet the way the other creatures acted it seemed that it was not right.

His dark blue eyes fell down to his claws. "Dragon," He whispered, his voice hoarse from not being used. It was what they called him wasn't it? In fact it was the first time he had spoke since he hatched. He knew some words some things in his mind, but he never really spoke them, never really had to speak them. He now had a name for who and what he was, but what about those terrifying creatures? What were they? They were so large and had a terrifying face.

He covered his face with his claws shutting his eyes, trying to forget the images which his mind was conjuring up for him. He would never see them again, he'd just have to be careful the next time he went to the lake for a drink. That or find another watering place where he could be alone and at peace. Alone, he had always been alone, and he believed that's how it should always have been. Even so at lease he knew what he was, who he was it was some sort of start. Still what was a dragon to be exact? He was one but why weren't there others like him?

His stomach gave a small annoyed growl getting his mind off of these question which ransacked his brain. Its growl reminded him how hungry he really was, he needed more then just water. Just as he was about to get up and move out from under the bush he remembered those strange three creatures. Where they still out there? He was to afraid to find out.

Demeter twitched her tail slightly at the slow and unhurried rate that Garfield seemed to respond to the baby dragon, she was beginning to wonder if anything could bring out a bit of excitement in the orange beast. Further thought on this however would have to wait.

Aw!..it was growling at her...wasn't that sweet? Clearly it must be trying to thank her for coming to its rescue.
"Well if his parents are about, they are clearly not taking proper care of him"Demeter snapped at Saturn as he showed even the tiniest implication of not giving her what she wanted. She huffed at him slightly and looked at him with big watery eyes until he agreed with her. Clearly her decision was the best one after all.

It was around that time that the object of her attention decided to run off into the forest
"You guys scared him off!" She chastised the two males before cooing slightly and frolicking off into the forest herself. The little baby dragon wasn't very hard to follow, and he didn't go very far before hiding under the bush.

Lowering her head to peer under the bush she cooed sweet sounds at the frightened baby to try and lure him out.
"it's alright sweet little baby..the big bad males won't hurt you!"She told him in that sing song motherly baby talk voice that all mothers despite their best intentions always seem to fall into.
