Well here's a discussion area for books that you think are rather good and wish to share with others. Or ask if any one knows a good type of book with a type of gnere that you like. Oh and don't give any spoilers please!

No vampires, but try "Brimstone" by Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston.

Does anyone else read these two authors BTW?

By the way, that book falls under the category of "supernatural" not romance biggrin
I enjoy supernatural books (along with Sci Fi & Fantasy)

Currently I am in the middle of Peter Straub's "Lost Boy Lost Girl"

as for Vampires, I can only think of 3 authors:

Bram Stoker
Anne Rice
L.J. Smith

Stephen King is very uneven. Some of his books are GREAT! The Stand (the first edition, not the re-release, where they added back way too much - it obscured the story!) was, well, outstanding. The Shining was fantastic. "It" was scary! The Gunslinger series is the only of his stuff I have not read.
SKIP Gerralds Game! it is awful!
The Girl Who loved Tom Gordon: Can be skipped
Misery: Not bad, not great
From a Buick 8: Not bad, but he has done MUCH better.
Carrie: Classic
Dreamcatcher: Scary. Worth reading
Nightmares & Dreamscapes: I can't remember it :/
Night Shift and Danse Macabre: Not bad
The Green Mile: I found this to be different than his other books. Definately tense, and scary in THAT sense, but not as much spooky.
Insomnia: I think I remembered enjoying that one
Skeleton Crew & Cycle of the Werewolf: I'd skip
Needful Things: Very good!!
Dead Zone: Good
Black House: Not bad
Firestarter: Definately worth reading!!
The Talisman: I liked it, had more of a feel of like an "epic", journey novel.
Riding the Bullet: Skip
Rose Madder: Not horrible, but can easily be skipped
Salem's Lot: Vampires in a small town. Not bad at all.
The Bachman Books, Thinner, Different Seasons: All OK, not fantastic, but only read if you read his other good stuff first.
The Regulators: Boring
Desperation: Not bad
The Eyes of the Dragon: Reads like a kiddie book, but not kiddie subject matter
Langoliers: Spooky!! Worth the read.
Bag of Bones: an old fashioned ghost story, not bad
Christine: Spooky. Good Spooky.
Cujo: Rabid dog. Family trapped. Was OK
Shawshank Redenption: Same as Green Mile
Tommyknockers: Spooky, worth reading - will stick with you
Doloris Clairborn, Hearts in Atlantis: Fair: worth skipping

That's all I can remember... with on exception... there was a short story of his I will never forget, called The Mist. I thought it was the spookiest story I have ever read. I would have called it the all time BEST Spooky short story EXCEPT that it really has no decent ending. That always dissapointed me.

I hope this helped! I can give more details to any specific book you want. I can also recommend other authors if you want spooky / supernatural. I like this genre a lot, and I read A LOT! biggrin

NOTE: I am talking about the books only, NOT the movies!
Also worth noting: Some of what King writes can definately be rated "R". If this concerns you, do a little research into the book, first.

Suggestion: Lincoln Child & Douglas Preston. They usually write as a team, but sometimes they write separately.

I think their books are GREAT! Just the right amoung of "spooky" and tense and intriguing.
I liked Reliquary a lot! If you are looking into their books, I can give you a rundown of those, as well.

Mercedes Lackey writes in several different styles, and with several different co-authors.
I suggest the "Owl" series, or the "Gryphon" series, or "Brightly Burning" or the "Magic's Price" series - actually, ANY of her "Valdemar" books (Valdemar is one of her "worlds", she has written many books sent in this world, and so far they've all been great). All these are basically magic and fantasy books.

A lot of her other books are odd. Some take place in current time, others are more like history texts. Also look for Larry Dixon. I think he might be her husband, and most of the books they wrote together were very good.
