Barton Town - The heart of Gaia. It's the forum that holds the very roots of Gaia together! Surviving as the oldest part of the forums on Gaia, this tasty gem is a one of a kind. We'll start the bidding at 1,000,000 Gaia gold!
- But in all seriousness, Barton Town is an integral part of Gaian History and society. Gaia was founded and marketed originally as being an 'Anime Roleplaying Site'. In that, Barton Town (or Barton back then) has always been around for your roleplaying needs.
Whether you're a sparkling vampire hellbent on seducing your ugly maiden fair and smiting the evil werewolves or a superstar rockin' away on your mic... in Barton Town, you can be anything you want to be.
It's a great place to write and live out your wildest dreams (as long as they stay within the guidelines of the TOS). It's long been said that Barton Town is full of a diverse type of people and I'm one to believe it.
So, let's talk about Barton Town! Why do you roleplay? What type of roleplays are your favourite? What is it about Barton Town you want to see changed? What is it about Barton Town that has us checking our RP threads at four in the morning when we should be sleeping... instead of worrying about getting the code right on our post styles? O_O
Discuss.

I've always been nervous about BT, so how do you find RPing on this site? Like, how does it work? What's the appeal?

Both are very good questions. In truth - A lot of people are intimidated by Barton Town and the content within it. There are fears of being under-qualified, overqualified, and of being ridiculed for your ideas and story lines. In truth, it's not nearly as scary as it sounds. It's actually a pretty fun place. Let's break it down a little bit on how it works:
When you're looking to find a roleplay, first think about what type of roleplay you want to participate in. Are you looking to roleplay in a group setting? (Three or more people together in one thread/consecutive PMs), or a one on one roleplay? (Two people in a single thread or done over consecutive PMs). After you've established that, you can browse in the Barton OOC subforum. There's where you want to go if you want to find a roleplay.
Next, where do you feel your comfort level is for roleplaying? Do you like writing a sentence or two? Do you like writing exquisit novels? If you're not sure what you like, or what your 'level' even constitutes as, there are typically examples of what these 'levels' are posted in the request threads themselves. Otherwise, it might be a little tricky. Barton Town needs some better guidelines on the 'levels'. They're classified as non-literate, literate, semi literate, and advanced literate. The tier system, while sounding scary, really isn't all that bad. Besides, if anyone here needs help to figure out what level they're at and comfortable at, I can help you out with that. Besides, not everyone starts out as literate advanced, and it surely isn't for everyone.
There are no good or bad levels. Do not let anyone tell you any different!
Once you find a thread, send a request! From there talk about your ideas and what types of stories you think you might want to try out. Do you want to pretend you're a genie in a bottle who was summoned and set free to do as they want now? I'm sure people would love to 'pretend' this story with you! There's really no limitations - You're only limited by what your imagination does not think of. Chances are, if you don't think of something... someone else will have ideas too!
If you don't find a thread you like and there are no ideas you're interested in - People love it when you make your own request threads too. Just be sure to read the stickies. Reporting threads in Barton Town can get interesting. O_O
Once you get in to it, things flow pretty naturally from there on out. As for the appeal... it's nice to write out a story as somebody, or something you're not. Being able to differentiate between fact and fiction... reality and make-believe, is always fun.
I'm a twenty-five year old homosexual man. However, I have characters who are male, female, human, non-human... and who are every orientation under the sun. I know who I am, but my characters can be whatever they can be. So long as I know the difference and know it's all for the fun of a game... it's really rewarding.
The appeal is a little different for everyone though. For me, it's being able to socially interact with people both as myself, and having us coordinate two fictional characters to react towards one another as well. All in all, it's exciting and fun!

I LOVE Barton Town! I love typing out a story and creating characters. heart I generally base the character I make off of whatever picture I find. I don't like... the super super literate ones where they do a page of typing and their posting style is as long as their post, but I do make a posting style and I do try to type out as much as I can. No one liners for misty. <3

There's a cross once hung 'round a soldier's neck.I actually run an role play thread in Barton Town now, despite never really venturing into the forum before. There's a link to it in my signature.
I haven't joined anyone else's role play yet because I haven't found one that I like. There's a man's faith died on Serenity's floor.

I like Barton Town very much. Some role plays can get pretty amusing like the one where there were different clans named after kitchen appliances and there was a war. All the moves were named after food and cooking ingredients (Burning Soy Sauce of Insatiable Appetite! Boomerang Croissant! Hard Bread Blade!). xD
I love writing and I like reading posts. Length is great if what's inside the post is entertaining and relevant to the role play. Long posts are boring if most of it is about how someone flips their hair and such.
It's sad that I can't find any role plays that cater to Persona and its series. Le sigh...
