Though often viewed as the least refined of the shinigami arts, none can argue that swordplay and hand-to-hand combat are amongst the most vital of required skills when dealing with different types of enemies on the battlefield. Not every fight can be won using Kido or Zanpaktou, and in those times when you are evenly matched in those arts, you must overcome an enemy with your own style. By choosing your own style of combat (be it open-handed, simple swordplay, or a killing fist), you can train and duel against others who fight with a similar style, increasing your ability en route to becoming a Master Level Fighter.
Becoming a masterful fighter will allow you to take on enemies without the use of Kido or the release of a Zanpaktou, or can be the edge against an evenly matched enemy using both. Growing more and more capable in the arts is a great way to get a leg up on the competition, and to give you more ways to survive should you ever get in a pinch! After all, this is one of the Four Shinigami Arts as well.

Shinigami who are in training will require varied amounts of time to master basic, advanced, and master-level swordplay. But by choosing a physical fighting style and practicing to master it, you can increase your battle potential a great deal. There is no set time for mastering certain levels of fighting, but if you can best shinigami of a certain level in a sparring match, you may just earn their approval for an upgrade in rank. These ranks might give you an upper hand in fights against your enemies, allowing you to execute maneuvers or react more easily to theirs when locked in a physical duel.
Remember! There is no substitute for experience! If you perform well in a certain style of fighting in events/missions, you may receive a boost to your fighting style as well.
