So, who's your favorite song/band?
Mine just happens to be Children Of Bodom (Just another guilty pleasure ^^)

Oh boy, enter in the whole discussion of whether or not CoB is Death or Power Metal. Luckily we can handle it like mature adults here, hopefully.
I myself am not too into death metal, and what death metal I do like is from Gothenberg, sadly. I'm not really into the genre, but I am willing to check out artists from it to see if my mind can be changed.

Like I said previously I suck a classifcation. But I've been told that CoB is Death Metal, then again I could be wrong biggrin

MangaManiak Im pretty sure CoB is Power Metal. I wouldn't say that, not by a long shot. I've always called them melodeath, or melodic death. They're moving to the more Gothenburg end of things now, playing less classical based stuff, and making it all heavier.

Yeah they are going towards more heaviness in their sound. Which I don't care what basically they're classified as I love the band as a whole 3nodding

Bleargh. So what if a band fits into two genres? Then it fits into two genres. Anyway, I haven't explored too deep into death metal, mostly just the important bands like Cynic and Cryptopsy.

Cryptopsy is about as important to Death Metal as A7X is to Power Metal. They're worthless. Cynic, on the other hand, was a brilliant band that truly offered a lot to the genre with Focus. One album from Cynic is better than 80% of today's Death Metal scene.
I do love a lot of the newer bands though. For instance, Impaled isn't an old-school band and they're one of my favorite bands. The same rule applies for the band Ghoul.
I do have a ton of love for the classics though. Cancer, Death, Deceased, Demilich, Hellhammer, Possessed, etc.
By the way, the new Deicide album is gonna be great. It's like they had a fresh new start now that the Hoffman brothers are out of the band. I heard three of the songs from the album and they're better than everything they've put out all the way back to their s/t.

I haven't really heard much Gordian Knot and I haven't heard any Portal. If you want Jazzy Death Metal like Cynic, try Acrimonia, Atheist, Disharmony, Exivious, Lost Detour, Impaled, Nyia, and Pestilence. Click the links for samples. You could download entire demos from the bands.

There are some Portal songs on the recent re-issue of Focus; it's not really metal, it's dark progressive rock; kind of like Opeth's Damnation, but much more technical.

Hmm.... I'd have to say that Possessed, Morbid Angel, and Death are my favorite Death Metal bands. Then again, I may not even have a favorite Death Metal band. I enjoy newer bands too, like Soilwork (first two albums), In Flames (The Jester Race).
