Digivolving is a steniuous process, requiring lots of energy. First and generally most importantly.. a digimon must be full (not too full though XD) hydrated, and in good health. If your digimon has a cold (which can happen) they shouldn't be trying this. Just like if you got a cold, you shouldn't go out and run a marathon. XD

The larger/stronger they need to change the harder it is to do! Think about it. If you're changing from the size of a dog to the size of the empire state building... How exhausted do you think you'd get?

As such, they will eventually get tired if they have to stay in their higher stages too long. Low levels like rookie and lower are easy enough for them to keep up without much effort. However they can still change back from there too. (No food or sleep or both could result in the common "Dedigivolution".)

Digimon must also be emotionally sound as well as the physical. A sad digimon will not want to do much. (Think about how eager you are to move when you're depressed.)

Also, digivolving is normally triggered by a need, and not a want. Danger is the most common, along with their bond's emotional distress or something like that.

The digivolving process is a very simple one. A child's digivice will react to the situation with a beeping noise. The digimon will glow brightly, and the glow will morph into the next stage.

Once a digimon has changed into a higher form (example: Rookie to Champion) it will be sort of a barrier release. Until a certain point in time they won't be able to do it, no matter what, and then suddenlly the "barrier" will break and they'' change. And from then on they can change at will. (As long as the health-needs are fufilled.)

In most normal circumstances the highest a wild digimon is ever going to get is Rookie. Without the companionship of a human child they won't be able to obtain enough energy to digivolve.
There are rare cases in which ones have overcome these obsticles through years and years of hard work and training... And as such will not have lead good lives, and ended up moving to champion stage not out of love like a bonded would but out of painful things.
