Water:
City Name: City of Water
Population: 80,000
Trades With: metal, earth, witchcraft, ice
Architecture: Water denziens use bioluminescent sea plants or bubbles as lights in their homes, creating an unearthly glow in the underwater dwellings of the elite and powerful. Luminescent sea anemones adorn the entries to homes and chandeliers of bubbles float in greater rooms. The larger the item to be enchanted, the harder it is to make it glow and effects how long it will remain lit. The magical capability of the citizen helps to decide where they live. The more powerful the mage, the further down their home is. The lower classes, which consist of non or lesser mages, live near the surface. Being able to live closer to the floor of the ocean is to show off a persons power and wealth. It is also safer during the large storms that seasonally hit that section of the continent. The architecture itself is all naturally formed caves set into the drop off located just off-shore. The size and intricacy of these caves debend on how wealthy a person is. The poorest people might live in a small one room cave susceptable to being washed out during storms, while a wealthy person might live in a veritable labyrinth system of caves at the ocean floor. People, even mages, are unable to change the physical structure of their home because their power over water doesn't allow them too, and mining them out is very hard and costly. Earth mages can't even be brought in to do the work because they are so far under the water.
Magic: The people of the city of Water are not only masters of water manipulation but can change water from liquid to vapor and back again, allowing them to purify water which they trade to the city of metal for jewelry made of precious metal. Mages are also capable of creating bioluminescent items, like rocks, bubbles, or even sea plants. The greatest of mages can enchant things to glow indefinitely. The greatest of these talents though may be their ability to control other, lesser, inhabitants of the sea through telepathy. Like everything else the power of the mage determines the size of the animal and amount of the control the mages has over the creature’s mind. This ability does not stretch to anyone of their own kind, or anything from land. Sea creatures only.
Surrounding Area: Located off the shore of the main island, the people of the water city built a large stone tower on the edge of an underwater cliff which protects the population from any would be invaders as they would have to dive far deeper than normal humans possibly could to access the sea dwellings.
Half of the tower juts out from the water, and serves serves as a beacon where trading can take place between cities. The rest of the tower is underwater and is used as the mage tower where the water mages learn and practice their craft.
Daily Life:
Shells, coral and pearls are all used to make beautiful jewelry that range from hair clips and combs, to necklaces, belt and rings. They often keep the best for themselves and only sell what is left over the rest of the cities. They are a vain people that love their shinies.
The caves where the water people dwell are decorated with coral grown and shaped to be used for furniture, woven seaweed as curtains blankets and pillows and white sand on the floors. Beds can range from rock shelves, soft sand or layers of kelp. Others weave kelp and seaweed together to make a hamoc like resting place.
People in the City of Water make a living in various ways, from being kelp farmers to coral growers, jewlery makers or Mages who make the all important bio-luminescent objects that light the homes of the wealthy.
Residents: Rather than just having 'fish' tails, the merpeople's tails can take the shape of any sea creature from a lobster to a seahorse or a tuna (sorry guys no mammals though like otters, dolphins, etc. no sharks either). Rather than the constantly open eyes of a fish, the water dwellers eyes are similar to those of a cat with pupils able to close to slits in bright light or dilate almost completely to see in the darkest depths of the ocean. Clothing is made of only materials found underwater (with the exception of precious metals, which they love), allow ease of movement but are so visually appealing since the merepeople place much importance on appearances.

“What do you mean my wife is gone?!” Kleevi Caesius demanded, ready to throttle the scrawny little man that was the tower keeper for the City of Water. “I just saw her last night! Where in blue blazes did she go?!”
“I-I'm sorry sir, but Mage Superior Merri and her entire teaching staff have gone missing!” the keeper stammered.
“The staff too? Where the hell were you? Why aren't you gone too?!”
“I don't know sir, I'm sorry!” the young man wailed, cowering before the wrath of the large, muscular merman before him.
“Ugh, you are useless! Begone with you!” Kleevi roared, sending the keeper fleeing from the office that belonged to his wife Merri.
The merman rubbed his temples, exhausted already. Something told him that today was going to be a very long, very tiresome day. He'd have to tell the city leader before the rumors that were no doubt already spreading throughout the city from the staff in the tower reached him first. Then they had to organize some sort of search party to try and find some trace of his wife and the other teachers...What was he going to tell their two little ones who were still waiting for them at home?
Kleevi let out a heavy sigh, settling back onto a chair grown from coral and said aloud “Merri my love, where are you?”

It had been a long and yet rewarding day for Morgane in the wilds outside of the city. She had found many precious jewels and shiny things that she would add to her collection. Of course, she had found some not so shiny thing and would probably send one of her maids to the tower to sell them to those foolish land dwellers. Might as well make a bit of money that wasn't given to her.

As she made her way home, she swam slowly along the streets. It seemed that the city was a bit more active at the moment. People were running about and there was quite a bit of chit chat going on. But it didn't really strike Morgane as something odd. Perhaps people were just feeling vocal today?

Who knew with this city. The mood of it's dwellers seemed to change daily. One day they would be fighting over something trivial and the next they would be sitting at the bars and cackling to their hearts content with each other. She really wished they'd make up their minds.

Then, out of no where, a hand reached out and grabbed her arm. Morgane let out a loud shriek of surprise before a webbed hand was slapped over her mouth. Turning her head slightly, she saw it was Demity. Her child hood friend. Or at least her child hood friend since her mother re-married anyway.

His eyes looked intense as he took his hand from over her mouth. But he kept a firm grasp on her arm. "So have you heard?"

Morgane raised an eyebrow quickly and gave him a look of annoyance. "Heard what? That you're as wet behind the ears as a baby seal when it comes to looking for gems and the like?"

"Shut up. You know that's not true. And that's not what I meant." He released her arm and moved back a bit. "The cities mages have gone missing. No one knows where they've gone nor why they left. They just seemed to vanish...."

"Vanish? How can anyone just vanish? I mean...there are guards all over the city. How could you loose someone in this place?" She placed a hand on her hip and gave him an 'are you serious?' kind of look.

"I don't know. But everyone is in an uproar about it. They're thinking about sending out a search party...." He blinked and in a second Morgane had already taken off down the street. "Hey! Where are you going?!"

As she swam off quickly she turned and waved. "Sorry Demity! I've got some business to take care of!! I'll see you around!" And with that she disappeared out of his sight.

She rounded corners and veered this way and that along the streets until she was nearly home. But the entire time she was cursing herself. "Damnit. I was going to go see the Mages in a few days! Why couldn't they have waited a bit longer before they disappeared! Those fools will never find them in time and who knows what else might happen to me. I need to find them and soon. But where could they have gone?"

She practically flew up the front steps to her home and slipped inside the large cave of her family, nearly knocking one of the servant girls over. Morgane was on a mission now. More of a selfish mission, but a mission non the less. By the next night she would be gone to search for the Mages. Her being missing might also raise more rumors. But she didn't care. This new found power, or so it seemed it was, intrigued her. And perhaps it could be refined to where she could control it better and make it useful.

Several days after the incident with the shark ... it happened. His friends had been bothering him ever since then about his powers. They all thought it was so great, so wonderful. And Afriel couldn't make them understand why it wasn't. He didn't want power at all, dammit.

And so he'd taken to hiding even from them lately, finding some secluded place out in the wilds, or in an alley of the city and just coiling around himself in a miserable ball and trying not to think.

It was there that Trion found him. Trion's lower body was one of the more common fish-like tails ... a few wavy fins along the sides, but mostly smooth and a uniform blueish-green color.

Afriel glanced up as the other barreled toward him, but he knew it was too late to go move somewhere else ... he'd been spotted. But for once, Tri didn't want to talk about his oh-so-awesome powers. Or at least not direction. "Afriel!! Did you hear yet? Everyone's talking about it!"

With a sort of long-suffering sigh, Afriel shook his head. Tri was younger, about twelve or so ... and easily excited. "No ... what's going on?" he asked, just to get it over with, if nothing else.

"All the Mages disappeared! All the teachers, I mean!" he burst out, smaller fins on his tails standing out in excitement as he fairly quivered with the news.

Afriel blinked. "So?" he asked. As far as he was concerned, that was good news. No Mage teachers meant no one to come bothering him about his own powers and learning to use them and all that. He didn't want to learn to use them, he wanted them to go away.

Tri's expression fell slightly. "But ..." he said, biting at his lip. "Don't you want to know ..." he trailed off. "I guess you don't."

"No. I don't," he said flatly, sinking down into his little nest of coils again. Which was when he had a sudden thought. He'd never heard of it but ... what if there were Mages that could ... take away power? Dammit! And they were all gone, Tri had said.

"Oh ... ok," Tri said quietly, and turned to go.

"Wait!" he called. "Does anyone know where they went?"

"No," the other replied, sounding a little sulky. He wasn't going to be any help now ... thanks to Afriel not reacting as the boy had wanted him to. Oh well ... there had to be someone that knew something, right? With his face set in a determined sort of expression, Afriel uncoiled himself and went looking for news...
