Olivia had her hood off, putting on her gloves. She was in her chambers, and as far as anyone could tell, she was alone, but she knew she wasn’t.
“You still don’t think I should go?” She asked Jane, who was somewhere around the balcony area of her chambers. Jane, a Deserter, quickly and silently dropped down from a ledge on the ceiling.
“Eve once lost a Queen who was doing the best for her country, fighting for their freedom; I don’t think our people want that to happen again.” Jane said quietly as she looked at Olivia for a moment while speaking, but then looked out the balcony at the setting sun.
“If I don’t lead them into battle, who will?” Olivia replied softly, noting when Jane took her leave off the balcony.
Her door opened. She knew he had been listening.
“I will.” Alex said, his voice determined, as he shut the door firmly behind him. Olivia looked up into her desk mirror that was next to her closet. She was ready.
She sighed as she looked at the girl that looked back at her through the mirror. She saw him staring at her through the mirror, she looked down to her hands, making sure her gloves were on tightly as she picked up her bow and strung it over her back, as it overlapped her quiver. She fingered her long blade at her side in a sheath as it clinked softly against her leg. She felt the hidden dagger in her high boot and the one also hidden in her wrist glove. She wanted to be prepared, and she was.
She looked herself down and then looked up to Alex, solemn expression on his face. She tried to ignore the fact that after this battle, they might not see each again for a very long time. She straightened her shoulders and pushed that thought away as her eyebrows deepened to give her face a hard expression.
“Ready the troops.” She said in a commanding voice, as Alex, with helmet in hand, nodded and slowly exited. Olivia’s eyes scanned the horizon as she looked off the balcony one last time before she left. She sighed again as she gazed upon her beloved city, she hoped to keep them safe, hoping that they would never have to feel despair again.
She turned her gaze away as she finally took one more look at her chambers before leaving after Alex.
