I walked into the World War II cemetery in Arlington, VA. I looked at all of the tombstones of all
of all of the soldiers that had died during World War II. I looked and looked for one particular grave, but I
couldn’t find it. After about an hour of looking, I gave up. As I was walking out of the cemetery, I saw the
grave I was looking for. I went over to the grave and crouched down, the headstone read “Sergeant First Class
John Mcullen. Brave hero, father, and grandfather.” I stood back up, and another grave caught my eye. I
looked at the headstone and this one read “Sergeant Steve Nixon, Great soldier, Loyal son, and good friend.
It didn’t take long before I found the rest of my squad, I read there names Private First Class Marty Jenkins,
Private Adam Brear, Corporal Nick Johnson, and Private Brad Smith.” After reading their headstones, I
started to flashback to World War II.
“COLE! GET ON THE GUN OR THE NAZIS WILL OVERRUN US DAMN IT!” I ran for the 30mm mounted in the window. I had to move aside the body of the last guy who was using it .He had taken two to the chest. After moving aside the guys body, I grabbed the handles of the gun and blasted at anything I saw
moving outside of the window. Hundreds of Nazis were rushing our position. We had made a base camp in a building at the end of the street, which, with our bad luck, had a Nazi commander inside of it. So we took the commander prison and prepared for the onslaught that we knew was coming.
I looked outside of the window after six strait hours of fighting and screaming. Remaining from our one hundred man company, eighteen were left, including me. But outside, were hundreds of dead bodies, destroyed vehicles and halftracks. Apparently, their commander had gotten loose and ran outside, only to be gunned down by his own men.
The rest of my company me walked outside on complete alert, waiting for anything. I sent three people go check out the commander’s body. To our surprise, we found a map of where they were going to attack next and how they were going to attack. There next attack point, St Lo.
We headed towards the facility we had just down the road. After gearing up and getting a few more people, we headed for St. Lo. As we were driving, a soldier spoke out as we drove past some fighting, “I thought we had cleared all the Nazis from this area.” Another soldier spoke, “Are you kiddin’ it’s been like this for weeks.” After they were through speak I said what our mission was, “Ok, today we are on a secret mission to get coffee and doughnuts, the problem is, the Nazis drank all the coffee and ate all the
doughnuts, so now, we gotta go kick their asses."
We were in our truck as a mortar hit right in front of the truck and caused it to start rolling on it’s side. We tumbled for about fifteen yards before we stopped right infront of St. Lo. I was knocked out for
about three minutes. I woke up being dragged by Brad and Nick. They dragged me up against a wall and checked if I was alright. “Yeah, I am fine.” I regrouped with Smith, Johnson, Brear, and Mcullen. A soldier
ran up to Mcullen. “Private first class Jenkins, requesting permission to join your squad.” Mcullen looked at Marty “Permission granted. What unit are ya’ from?” Jenkins ducked so that none of the Mg42 bullets hit
him. “I am from the 32nd.” Mcullen looks at him “Alright, let’s go, help us over the wall.
Jenkins ran up to the wall and helped Mcullen, Me, Smith, and Brear pver the wall. Then he climbed over the wall. The artillery was so bad, we were forced to split up. Me and Jenkins ran over to the church. We ran inside and shot the two Nazis that were trying to run out of the church. We ran out of the church and came face to face with one of the German Tiger tanks. “Oh Crap!” We ran out of the way just as it fired a round into the church. It had reloaded and had aimed it’s main gun at us, just then, an American M4A3 Sherman tank shot the Tiger in the side causing it to explode. “Thank god.”
We continued to run, we had found a café that we could use as cover in. As we ran in, we saw Brear, Mcullen, Smith, Johnson, and Nixon. “Wow, what a coincidence to run into you guys here. Run into much
trouble?” Mcullen turned around “No, but the Nazis sure as hell did.” An artillery shell hit the café. “We gotta get out of here, this place’ll be around our ears.” Jenkins yelled to everyone. Mcullen looked at Jenkins “We leave and the 42’s will get us.” Jenkins stood up “Well it’s sure as hell better then being crushed by tons of rubble, so I am falling back.” Jenkins turns around and starts leaving, but Mcullen aims his M1A1 Thomson at him. “Your not going anywhere.” Brear had walked away and fund a hatch. “Hey guys, I found a tunnel.” Mcullen looks at Brear and nods his head and looks at Jenkins “Your lucky.” He aims his gun down and walks towards Brear.
We all slid down the ladder into the cellar. There were two paths, one to the left, one to the right. Mcullen, Nixon, and me went left. Brear, Smith, Jenkins, and Johnson went right. Two people came rushing around the corner and started shooting at us. We took cover behind some of the boxes. Mcullen tossed a grenade and killed the two Nazis. We started to advance slowly. We head a yell that came from Johnson. We started to run to the end of the hall. We saw three dead Nazis on the ground. We ran down the right hall and saw Brear, Jenkins, and Smith crowded around Johnson. “What happened?” Jenkins looked up “One of the Nazis shot him whit he tried to advance.” Mcullen walked forward to look at Johnson; he was shot in the top right part of his chest. He called Smith over “So do you think he’s going to make it?” Smith looks back at Johnson and then back at Mcullen “I don’t think so Sir, he’s messed up pretty bad.” They look back when they here me yell, “We’re losing him!” Smith just stood there. I Stand up and run over to Smith “Aren’t you going to do anything?!” He looks at me, and then at Johnson, “There is nothing we can do. I am sorry Cole.” He pats me on the shoulder and walks past me. Johnson puts his head up and looks at me and says “Hey Cole, what did Smith say?” I looked down, “He said that you were gonna be fine.” Johnson lays his head back down, “Good.” I wave to Brear and Jenkins to “come on”. Johnson picked his head up again, “Where are you guys going?” Jenkins turned around “We’re going to get a medic.” Johnson laid down, “Alright, but make sure to come back.” Jenkins turns around and starts walking “We will.”
