Talner is odd. He doesn't make friends easily (or at all, really). He doesn't let anyone get close to him. Talner's lived under the shadow of his two older brothers all of his life and is used to not being recognized for what he does. He's quiet and prefers to be alone.
Physical Description Overview:
Talner's about average height or so, with brown hair and brown eyes. He's usually got a few bruises or scars somewhere from fighting with his older brothers. Though he doesn't look it so much, he's stronger than one would expect.
Background:
Talner is the third child in a family of three boys. His parents got divorced when he was only 5 years old. Talner's father never pays child support and never sees the boys. The boy's mom was left to raise three young boys by herself, so she took to working small jobs; whatever she could get. That left her working all sorts of odd hours, so Talner hardly saw her as well.
Talner's oldest brother, Conner, is seven years older than Talner. The middle boy, Jamie (he prefers JC), is five years older. Both blamed Talner for their parents' divorce.

A day in the life:

Beep, beep, beep, beep. One arm poked its way out of the covers, slapping about on the nightstand before it found its target: the snooze button. The youth sighed, his arm flopping down to the side of the bed as he slipped into the bliss of that extra five minutes of sleep.

Beep, beep, beep, beep. The alarm went off once again and this time Talner shut it off. Sighing, he slowly sat up in bed, groggily looking about the room. It was a mess. There were books scattered about the carpet. Papers that appeared to have been crumpled and tossed every which way littered the floor. Several pairs of socks, two left shoes, and a jacket were also strewn about the room.

His room was fairly small, really only large enough for his twin sized bed to fit across the long wall, the nightstand barely squeezing under the windowsill, and a desk on the section of wall next to the door. His closet would scarcely fit him inside and half of his clothes were falling off their hangers. A laundry basket overflowing with dirty clothes sat in the closet floor.

Stumbling across the room in just his boxers, Talner peered through his closet. ‘Blast it. Mom forgot to do laundry again,’ the boy thought as he bent down and dug through the laundry basket. “Ah.” He pulled out a pair of faded blue jeans and brought them up to his nose, sniffing. “Don’t smell dirty.” He mumbled to himself as he pulled the pants on, and then grabbed a random shirt from a hanger, knocking three others into the basket below. He pulled the dark green shirt, worn and with a few holes starting to appear, over his head and pulled his door open.

SLAM! The door shut right back in his face, almost smacking Talner. Laughter came from the other side of the door as the boy’s two older brothers ran to fight over who would be the first one in the bathroom.

Sighing, Talner opened his door, glaring down the hallway to the middle boy, Jamie. The older boy preferred to go by JC, considering his first name to be girly. Talner didn’t get it, since Jamie’s middle name didn’t even begin with a C. That just convinced the younger boy even more that his brother was insane. The oldest boy’s name was Conner. JC was older than Talner by five years and Conner was older by seven. Both ganged up on him all the time.

Talner stood behind Jamie, who pushed his little brother back a step. “I’m next,” the older boy declared, clearly daring the younger boy to challenge him. When Talner remained silent, JC turned and banged on the door. “Hurry up, Conner!”

“Shut up, you little girl,” was the yelled response back.

Jamie came back with, “You’re the one who takes the longest.”

The door whipped open and Conner exited, shoving the middle boy on the shoulder as he passed the two to head downstairs. Jamie quickly darted into the bathroom, slamming the door once again in Talner’s face, who had tried to get in while his brother was distracted.

“I told you I was next, squirt!”

The youngest child sighed and leaned against the wall to wait for his turn in the bathroom. After about five minutes, the door opened again. Talner ducked under his brother’s arm and shut the door, locking it to gain a bit more privacy. Turning on the faucet to cold, the boy splashed water onto his face. He grabbed a comb and managed to make his brown hair lie mostly flat.

He then relieved the pressure in his bladder, not having to raise the seat up (for it already was). He flushed the toilet, not bothering to lower the seat and washed his hands before unlocking the door and making his way downstairs.

JC and Conner were already at the table, eating some cereal. Talner opened the fridge to get milk to spot an empty milk jug. He groaned as his older brothers laughed and left the kitchen. Grabbing his backpack from the floor next to the front door, the youngest headed out to the bus stop.

Crunch, crunch, crunch went the gravel under Talner’s feet as he headed down the road. The bus stop was a quarter of a mile from his house. Conner was old enough to drive his beat-up and rusted pickup truck to the high school, but he didn’t bother to take either of his little brothers. Even if Jamie went to the high school too. Conner was now a senior and it didn’t look cool if you were toting around your younger siblings.

Talner raised his head up as he heard Conner’s truck head down the road towards him. He quickly ran to the side of the road, jumping the ditch to get out of the vehicle’s path. Conner had tried to run him over too many times. He’d almost succeeded once.

The older boy laughed out the open window at his brother, who was standing among the bushes on the other side of the ditch. “Wimp,” yelled Conner as he revved the engine up and flew on down the gravel road. Talner waited until his oldest brother was a distance down the road before jumping the ditch again to land with a loud crunch on the gravel.

Another slow crunch, crunch, crunch told the ten-year-old that his other brother was walking down the road as well. Talner quickened his pace a touch as he headed the rest of the distance to the bus stop.

JC arrived at the bus stop only a minute behind his little brother. Talner watched Jamie out of the corner of his eye. Just as he figured, the fifteen-year-old bent down and picked up a few of the larger rocks on the road. Talner sighed, his body tensing up to dodge the barrage that his brother would soon lob at him.

Sure enough, JC started throwing the rocks at his brother. Talner’s backpack slipped off his shoulders as the boy quickly moved to get out of the line of fire. He heard the sound of rock hitting rock as the first several missed. Then JC pelted Talner on the shin with one of the rocks. Wincing, the younger boy paused, which gave his brother an opportunity to throw more rocks.

Talner darted out of the way, running up to his brother as Jamie stopped to pick up more rocks and kicking the older boy on the shin. As JC dropped the rocks in his hands and glared up at his little brother, Talner knew he’d crossed the line. He had let his anger get the better of him and now JC was going to beat him up.

Trembling, Talner backed up. Jamie slowly advanced towards the boy, his anger showing clearly on his face. The sound of the school bus distracted JC long enough for Talner to grab his backpack and sprint towards the fields, leaping across the ditch. The younger boy ran across the open area until he grew too tired to keep running. He slowed to a stop, looking over his shoulder.

Relief hit him as Talner realized that his brother had not taken up the chase. The boy then groaned as he realized that he’d missed the bus because of it. And his brothers would tattle to Mother about how he didn’t go to school. The boy kicked his foot against the ground. He hated school anyways. Not because he was bad at it or didn’t understand. It was quite the opposite, in fact.

Talner had come home once in first grade, proud of his report card. He had shown it to his mother, who had praised him for his good grades and how he was brighter than his older brothers. That, of course, had ticked off Jamie and Conner and the two had beat Talner up later that day. They threatened him that if he ever brought home a better report card than them again, he’d get beat up even worse.

So now Talner was forced to do poorly in school, which he hated. He understood all of the stuff, but had to pretend otherwise. Tests were the worst. Half of the time he just handed one in blank. He’d had several talks with teachers; each of them convinced that he could do better if he only tried a bit harder. That was the absolute worst thing. Twice Talner had almost blurted out the reason he did so poorly in school but stopped himself. If his mom heard about it, she’d punish his brothers, who would just beat him up for tattling. He’d learned that lesson quickly when he was younger.

Sighing, Talner pulled his backpack higher up on his back by the shoulder straps and started walking over towards the road. It was almost five miles to the school. He’d better start walking if he wanted to get there before lunch. Though his brothers would still tattle about him missing the first couple of periods, he could at least surprise JC when he got on the bus after school.
